One option for replacing multiple missing teeth.

Dentures are one of the options available for those patients who have lost their natural teeth. Dentures provide a replication of lost teeth as closely as possible, both in functionality and appearance. Exact measurements are taking with impression molds of the gums and surrounding supportive tissue. These molds help prevent slippage by ensuring as tight a fit as possible. The shape and size of the mouth is considered to help create an aesthetic appearance. As a person ages, their gum and mouth tissues can distort, altering the effectiveness of the current dentures causing difficulty in speaking, chewing and a loose fit. If you have not been fitted for dentures recently and this is what you are experiencing, it may be necessary to get a re-fitting.

Different Kinds of Dentures

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are an excellent option for patients who have lost a few teeth in one or several areas of the mouth and bridges are not an option. Working much like a conventional orthodontic retainer, partial dentures use plastic gum-colored base fitted with wires which wrap around existing teeth to hold replacement teeth in the desired position. A properly customized fit is essential to keeping partial dentures in place as they lock in with your remaining natural teeth. An impression of your mouth is taken to get the correct specifications for a partial denture. Then, after fitting appointments, the partial denture will be ready for use. For many patients this is an excellent solution for missing teeth that will provide a tight fitting replacement that can be used normally for biting and chewing.

Vinyl Dentures

When patients with sensitive gums experience irritation (or in some cases a full allergic reaction) to the plastic materials used in traditional dentures, vinyl dentures are the best solution for a comfortable prosthetic. Using a soft, high impact vinyl allows for a small amount of flex in the dentures while still maintaining a tight fit in the mouth. This greatly reduces irritation for patients with sensitive gums. Additionally, the vinyl used does not contain the monomers that are present in plastic dentures, so allergy concerns are avoided.
